Definition
URL encoding converts characters into a format that can be transmitted over the Internet.
Why It Is Needed
URLs can only contain ASCII characters. Special characters and spaces must be encoded.
How It Works
Special characters are replaced with % followed by hexadecimal numbers.
Space becomes %20 or +
@ becomes %40
Example
"hello world" -> "hello%20world"
"user@example.com" -> "user%40example.com"
